The Marine's Seduction #newrelease #loriking

Best friends since childhood, Bristol Abbot and Roan Storm wouldn’t dream of mucking up their relationship with sex, until his deployment going away party and too much tequila drive them together.

Six weeks later, there’s more than just friendship at stake.
Bristol is pregnant while Roan is stationed overseas for six more months, and neither knows what comes next.

As the weeks turn into months, their friendship morphs into a shared devotion to their child and each other. Bristol is determined to honor her promise of including Roan in their child’s life, she just has no assumptions of a deeper relationship no matter how much she wants more.  For Roan, what once seemed impossible, now feels as necessary as breathing, and he comes home with a new set of orders in mind.

This Marine has seduction on the brain…

Excerpt

“Whose idea was it to get an apartment on the third floor of a building with no fucking elevator?” she groaned, holding her head.
“If I recall, you wanted this place because of the rooftop deck. Said you could watch the sunrise whenever you wanted like you were on top of the world.”
“Yes, the roof!” Bristol nodded and clapped her hands excitedly. “Let’s go up there and look at the stars.”
“You need to get some sleep, B,” he protested as she pulled him through the small apartment to the stairway he knew led above.
“I will, but we can look at the stars now, then when you’re gone, I’ll think of you every time I look up at them. I’ll know you’re looking at the same stars, thinking of me.”
Roan knew she probably didn’t intend her words to be so sentimental, but the alcohol was acting like a truth serum, and it shut down her inhibitions. She rarely allowed anyone to see this side of her. Following her up the tiny flight of stairs, he was soon seated on a wooden lounge chair, with her between his legs, her back against his chest, his arms wrapped around her to keep her warm.
“See, there’s my favorite, Ursa Major, the Big Bear,” she pointed upwards.
“Isn’t that the Big Dipper?”
“Yes and no. The Big Dipper is part of the Big Bear, but they’re still two different constellations,” she explained. “My dad taught me that when I was tiny.”
Her voice was wistful when she spoke of her recently deceased father, and Roan hugged her tighter. Having lost his own mother to uterine cancer when he was eleven, he sympathized with her pain.
“Roan, how much longer do you think you can take doing these missions?” she asked randomly.
Stunned silent, he could only shrug behind her.
“You’ve been gone more than you’ve been home. Don’t you get lonely?”
“Sure, every Marine gets lonely occasionally, but I’m one of the lucky ones because I get constant contact. You and my family send me packages, letters, and cards, and I can use FaceTime on some missions, Skype on others. There are plenty of guys over there who don’t have access to any of that.”
“Would you stay if they gave you the option?”
Roan tensed and frowned down at the top of her head, “What do you mean?”
“I don’t know. I just hate when you’re gone. My world seems off-kilter somehow.” She sat up abruptly. “I’m like Lucy with no Ethel.”
“Excuse me?” He felt his eyebrow arch in question. “I am no Ethel. If anyone here is Lucy, it’s me.”
“Nah, Lucy was always instigating trouble, and Ethel just went along with it.”
“Which is exactly why I’m the Lucy in this relationship,” Roan laughed. She shivered, and he tugged her back against him. Instead of resuming their spooned position, she lay sideways against him, her shoulder on his chest, her hands dangerously close to forbidden territory. “If you’re cold, we should go back downstairs.”
“I don’t want to yet. I like having you all to myself,” she sighed and tipped her face up, the pale moonlight barely lighting her face properly. “Have you ever thought about giving it up? The Marines, I mean?”
“Aw, B, of course, it’s crossed my mind. Every man who’s had to watch a friend die or had to kill someone has second-guessed his career choice, but I was born to be a Marine. Giving it up would be like giving up air. My body just wouldn’t work anymore.”
She nodded, “I figured you would say something like that.”

“I always come back.”

Kieran Murphy knew that Josie Cadman was important to him from the moment he saved her from a mad man. The only thing stopping him from claiming her was the fact she wasn’t his mate.

Josie convinced herself that what she felt for Kieran was nothing more than hero worship. Hearing that he’d found what he was looking for, and it wasn’t her, made it painfully clear that no matter what her feelings, they simply weren’t reciprocated.

When she bumps into Liam McMurtrie, literally, Josie starts to believe that perhaps there might be an alternative option. It’s not until the three of them cross paths in the heat of another battle on the streets of Chicago, that their true fate is revealed.

Can the three of them deal with another mafia mad man hell bent on destroying their lives and still find their way to a future together? Or will they lose their chance at redemption?

BOOK COVER…

The story…

STORY EXCERPT:
“Josie,” Violet said the name out of the blue, and immediately the image of the woman popped into his mind, her blonde pixie haircut giving her a look of sexy sass and, combined with her full lips and startling blue eyes, took his breath away.
“Aha!” Violet exclaimed excitedly, pointing a finger up at him accusingly. “This melancholy vibe you got going on has nothing to do with the challenges this city faces from Santiago’s douchebag replacement heading this way, and everything to do with Josie Cadman. I knew you had the hots for her, and I totally know she’s jonesing for you, so what’s the holdup? Let’s get to the mating, claiming, biting stage of your relationship so I can get me some female companionship around here. There is way too much—um, wait. What’s that look for?”
Kieran had winced when Violet had talked about mating and claiming Josie, and there was a very good damn reason for that. Josie was not his mate, at least not in the true shifter sense of the word. As soon as he had walked into that warehouse four months ago to face Santiago and help Violet rescue Josie, he had wanted Josie for his own. Everything within him screamed that she was theirs—hell, even his damn lion roared with the need to make her his. But the mating bond had not formed. Her scent, an alluring mix of honeysuckle and citrus, called to him for sure, but there was no connection within him that signaled that she was the one woman destined to be his. From what he had been told, there was no missing that when it happened. How could she be his if there was no bond?
“Fuck me sideways,” Violet said gently, stepping back with a look of pure horror on her face. “Forget everything I just said then about, you know the whole mating thing and the fact that Josie is jonesing for some lion loving, because that just might have been a breach of the damn sisterhood code. Nope, not ruining one of the only two female friendships I have, no siree! You just forget I said anything about it and—”
Kieran’s frustrated growl erupted, and Violet stopped rambling. The last thing he needed was for her to go running back to Josie and telling her that Kieran felt nothing for her. “Christ, woman, would you let a man get a word in? Josie is a beautiful, amazing, strong woman that any man would be proud to call his. I would have to be dead from the fucking waist down not to feel anything for her, and she would have to be completely blind and oblivious not to see my reaction to her every damn time she walks into a room.”
Violet frowned. “Then there is something else going on here, because I’m not stupid and have seen the way you both look at each other. Hell, there has been more than one occasion I’ve had to go find my mates for a little somethin’ somethin’ in the afternoon from the sexual tension the two of you give off, if you know what I mean. And if you don’t, I mean in the sexual kinda way.”
Kieran groaned, closing his eyes for a moment. “God damn it, Violet, there’s a visual I just did not need in my day.”
“Then what the hell is the problem?”
Kieran sighed, an ache forming in his chest. “She’s not my mate.” Violet’s eyes widened in surprise. “When a shifter finds the one the Fates have destined for them, they experience a physical reaction. Their scent draws them like nothing else, and their entire being shakes with the knowledge that they have found their mate. It is rare for a shifter who is an only child to find their mate, but I know I have one. Somewhere out there, she exists. I don’t know how I know that, but I do. But it’s not Josie. Despite wanting her with everything within me, I experienced nothing to indicate she is my mate. Without that, then I run the risk of connecting to her, coming to love her, and maybe, if I am the luckiest son of a bitch on the face of the planet, convincing her to fall in love with me. Then what happens if I meet the woman the fates have destined for me? What then, Violet? Because I am all outta answers. I will end up ripping Josie’s heart out, and probably my own at the same time. I can’t do that. Not to her. She’s lost too much.”
Josie had lost a lot during this damn war. Both her parents had been killed and her sister was missing, presumed a victim of one of Santiago’s human trafficking rings. Kieran had been telling himself since her rescue that he had been taking care of her. That his daily visits were a chance to simply ensure the safety and protection of a woman who had helped him and his pride rid the city of Santiago. But if he were honest with himself, it was because he couldn’t stand for a day to go by without having just a slice of her in his life.
Violet took a deep breath, and Kieran hated the flash of pity that flickered across her expression. “You’re a good man, Kieran Murphy.” Kieran cringed at the words no man ever wanted to hear from a beautiful woman. Sure, she was mated to two of his pride, but the premise remained true. “No, I mean that. My experience with males hasn’t been the best. Other than my Poppa and my mates, there haven’t exactly been a huge number of male role models in my life. But I’m gonna add you to that list, Alpha Kitty. It must be hard to not act on that attraction when you have to know that it is returned.”
Kieran nodded quietly. “You have no idea.”

New release DIRTY LIARS! #newrelease #dirtyliars #kindle unlimited

Undercover FBI agent Nikolai has been treading a fine line between right and wrong for the last few years, and everything he has worked for is thrown into utter chaos the moment he risks it all to save Harper.

Harper’s life has just been turned upside down, and now she must rely on the one man who has been lying to her from the moment they met.

Can they overcome all the dirty lies told between them?

Nikolai leaned against the bar of the night club with a drink in hand, the cool liquid sliding its way down his throat as the lights pulsed and the music blared. Beside him, his partner Travis chatted with some brunette whose tits seemed bigger than her brain from the way their conversation had deteriorated. Nikolai gave them five more minutes before the chick dragged Travis to the bathroom to finish things off.

"Jesus Christ, man, just do her already, would you? We’ve got work to do," he muttered and finished off the last of his drink.
The woman threw him a withering glare and attempted to be affronted by his comment as though that hadn’t been her endgame to begin with.
"Ignore him, sweetheart. The man’s on edge because he hasn’t had the pleasure of a Tesoro like you in a while." Travis chuckled, nuzzling the woman’s neck and whispering something Nikolai couldn’t hear. Given her intense reaction, he was kind of glad.
“Travis,” he warned.
The other man sighed. "Why don’t we finish this...elsewhere, Tracey?"
“It’s Stacey,” she said with a frown, her brows smoothing out almost instantly as she shrugged. “And will he be joining us?”
Nikolai nearly choked. “Ah, he will be just fine thanks.”
Giving him what he supposed was an extremely intoxicated come-hither look, she reached out and stroked her hand down his arm. “Are you sure?”
“I’m sure.” He glowered at Travis. “Just hurry the fuck up.”
Travis winked and grinned. "Come on, man. We both know my prowess is better than that."
Before Nikolai could snap back with some scathing retort, Travis grabbed Stacey and all but dragged her away.
Testa di cazzo.”
Christ, he hated having to be the serious one. Here they had a job to do, and Travis was once again off fucking some chick in a dirty bathroom while he kept watch and waited. It surprised him that Travis’ cock hadn’t fallen off with all the action it got. Hell, the family would likely remove it themselves if they screwed this up. Working for the Martinelli’s had its perks, but it also had its consequences if you fucked up. You did not want to piss off one of the main families of the Italian mob.
And Nikolai, well, he was pulling double duty for them and the FBI, and if the Martinelli’s found out who he really was then he’d be dead within seconds.
Ah, undercover work. Why the hell had he volunteered for this again?
Still, the chance to have a hand in taking down the people who ran the city’s major sex trafficking network was worth the risk. Nikolai had seen enough of the damage in his time working for Boston PD. The aftermath, the human beings reduced to nothing but mere cattle and then left in the gutter when they were considered damaged goods, were too much for him to handle. So when he joined the FBI, and worked his way into the Organized Crime Unit, he jumped at the chance for this assignment.
If only he had realized how complicated things would end up.
“Can I buy you a drink?” a husky, yet slightly irritating voice asked him, jerking him out of his daze.
Fuck. He was supposed to be on the lookout.
Nikolai turned his head to peer at the woman. Average height, slim build, and eager blue eyes stared back at him. Looking closer, he realized this was no woman, but a kid, no more than sixteen or seventeen if he had to guess. And dressed to impress.
Smiling politely, Nikolai shook his head. “Sorry, kid. I’m a bit busy at the moment.”
Although cute in her own way, he wasn’t interested or into statutory rape.
The young girl’s gaze narrowed. “What? Are you working or something?”
He smirked. “Something like that.”
If only she knew.
“So you’re a whore?” the girl scoffed, and Nikolai fought hard not to roll his eyes. “In the wrong area aren’t you?”
Annoyed, Nikolai turned to face the adolescent brat square on. “No, I’m not a puttana.” However, your quick assumption and clear lack of common sense, suggest you are much younger than you claim to be.” He shrugged. “At least to get into this club anyway.”
The girl all but screeched in outrage. The term if looks could kill came to mind. “You asshole. You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Uhuh, I’m sure I don’t,” he drawled, his eyes moving to scan the room again. He huffed out a sigh when the girl continued to stand there scowling. “Listen, we both know you are too young to be here and way too young to be offering what you’re not so willing to give just yet.”
Her attitude morphed with his words, and she pouted. “Can I even get your name?”
His eyes narrowed as he studied the girl. She had been quick to react to almost anything he had thrown at her, and even faster in deflecting. Her ability to go from seductress to outrage, to manipulation, was like a warning bell. Fuck...the kid was a pro or at least one in training.
Knowing only kind and concerned words would encourage, Nikolai settled for glaring. “Go home, little girl. You don’t belong here. And you don’t want to.”
Without a second glance, Nikolai grabbed his drink and left the bar, moving through the crowd.
The thumping of the beat echoed and vibrated up through his feet. He loved the sound of techno, nothing got bodies swaying and grinding like a decent bass.
He felt eyes roaming over him as he passed through the crowd. Nikolai knew what they saw. Ice blue eyes, broad, muscular shoulders with thick thighs encased in a tight pair of black denim and a white shirt. His Italian roots were strong and noticeable with his hair so dark it looked black with flecks of light brown strands. With both arms covered in tattoos and a thick beard, Nikolai gave off a menacing vibe that worked well in his profession and had the added benefit of making people avoid him. Given that he wasn’t a fan of most people and hated conversation, even more, it worked for him.
Reaching the other side of the dance floor, he claimed a seat with a perfect view. While the sight of all those hot, sweaty bodies was tempting, Nikolai really did have a job to do.
“Well, that certainly relieved some tension.” Travis snickered, slapping him on the back as he flopped into the chair next to him.
Grunting, Nikolai narrowed his gaze at the other man. “You know, when guys go to the bathroom to relieve themselves, they usually have something else in mind.”
“Not if they’re doing it right.” Travis chuckled.
Shaking his head, Nikolai’s gaze continued to move around the room, keeping an eye out. “Focus, will you. The targets should be here any moment.”
Travis' eyes were already scanning the room, taking in the throng of moving bodies on the dance floor, and slipping to the few women who sat at the tables nearby. The guy couldn’t help himself.
"See anything?" Nikolai asked, growing more concerned by the minute when nothing appeared to be happening. Were they being set up?
"Actually, there might be?" Travis’ eyes lit up as he spotted something across the room. “But it’s not the something we were expecting, that’s for fucking sure.”
Nikolai followed Travis’s gaze, and his entire body froze when he caught sight of who more than what had Travis’s attention.
Shit. Not her.
“Isn’t that Annabella and those two friends of hers? What are…” Travis’s voice trailed off in disbelief.
Damn.
Nikolai growled. “What are the chances that the club we are sent to in order to stop a trade from going down, also happens to be the same one the daughter of one of the five families has decided to party at?”
Shit. He wasn’t in a position to deal with this crap and had no real back up in place.
He watched as Annabella and her friends Harper and Corina moved to the dance floor. They wore identical easy-going smiles as a few men closed in on them, giving them their undivided attention.
Travis nodded, a peculiar look on his face. “Did we actually get intel on what was being traded?”
“No. Just that whatever it was had a large price tag attached. The family wanted us to intervene, grab it for ourselves and if need be take out the competition,” he said absently, his eyes fixed on the young women. “You don’t think they are the...?”
“Yeah. I really fucking do.”
When Travis got quiet, Nikolai snuck a glance at him, worried when he could see the other man contemplating something.
“We should let this play out.”
“No,” Nikolai said too quickly.
Travis eyed him suspiciously before frowning. “You think the family will be any more impressed if we bring Annabella home but can’t identify who was after her? They are already looking for a mole in the ranks. No need to draw attention to ourselves and have them ask if we’re up to the task they gave us, ya pussy.”
“They’re just girls. We can’t use them as bait,” he snapped.
Christ, there were lines he was forced to cross on a regular basis, but this?
“Since when do you care?” Travis raised an inquiring brow. “Or is it just a who?”
Grunting, Nikolai ignored the question, and that seemed to encourage Travis.
“I’ve seen the way you eye that Harper chick Annabella’s friends with.”
Travis didn’t know the half of it.
For the last few months, he and Harper had been what could be loosely termed as dating. Ever since the families hosted their enormous Christmas party.
Too much wine and festive cheer had found the two of them going at it like rabbits in one of the upstairs bathrooms. Not his finest moment, he would have to admit. However, things hadn’t ended there. They had managed to stumble their way back to his apartment and had spent the entire weekend getting to know each other thoroughly.
That’s when he realized she knew nothing about their world or what her friend’s family was truly capable of. Harper was an innocent.
Knowing it was a mistake, but not able to make himself care, they spent more and more time together. Before he knew it, they had a regular standing date every Thursday night.
And now she had a target on her back. All because he chose to encourage her presence within this circle of madness, instead of chasing her away from Annabella and himself.
Nikolai glared at him and then stood. “Let’s grab them and get out of here.”
“I still think we should…”
As Travis trailed off, Nikolai frowned. “What?”
Travis practically leaped out of his chair, eyes widened in horror. “Oh fuck me.”
Nikolai’s confusion didn’t last long as he glanced at the crowd where the women had been and let out a string of curses when he realized why Travis was freaking out. “Where the fuck are they?”

EXCERPT
Josh tried really hard not to acknowledge how the touch of her hand in his made him feel. He needed to focus. "How long have you been looking for me?"
A self-deprecating laugh bubbled out when she shook her head. "Um, about twenty minutes after you had checked out."
"What?" Josh asked, surprised.
She started looking for him before? He had assumed she began her search when she discovered the pregnancy. God, he really needed to stop assuming things, because regardless of the saying, the only one it made look like an ass was him.
"When I got home, I called my sister to blast her for letting me drink and go home with a strange man who could have hurt me. Needless to say, she reminded me I was a grown woman and when she was done, she told me about you. Charlotte said we really hit it off, and you seemed like a great guy. She also mentioned I'd be a fool to let you slip through my fingers."
"So you called the hotel, and they told you I was gone.” He made it a statement. He could see exactly how it played out. "And you didn't know my last name, so they wouldn't give you any details and you couldn't track me down."
Bri nodded. "Pretty much. I tried to move on, even when small parts of the night came back, but then I got really sick and went to the doctor. That was eight weeks ago. This morning Charlotte turned up on my doorstep with the article about you and daddy.” She grimaced when she mentioned her dad.
He repeated the action. "I can't believe Brian Evan is your father.” He was in so much trouble.
"Uh-huh.” She nodded, agreeing with him.
He winced. "You know he's gonna have my balls and my business, right?"
"Daddy won't do that.” She didn't quite believe her own words.
"Oh, yes, he would. I'd do the same damn thing if it were my daughter."
Aw, hell. He'd probably just shoot the bastard.
"Good to know.” She snickered.
Frowning, it took him a minute to catch on. Then he paled when it hit him, that he might very well have a daughter. "Oh, God."
She didn't snicker again—she laughed her ass off. "Just dawned on you, did it?"
His usual anger at being the butt of the joke never came. Bri didn't intend it to be mean, she simply found him amusing, and he kinda liked that.
What is this woman doing to me?
"Your father is still gonna come after me. You have to be prepared for that. I promise I won't let that interfere, though."
Bri sobered quickly. Deep in thought, her brow furrowed. Her button nose scrunched up, and she gave her bottom lip a workout. Still, nothing could have prepared him for her next words.
"We could tell him we're engaged."

Excerpt

Megan Campbell stepped away from the cash register of Notes & Roses and leaned against the back counter. She put her right hand in her jeans pocket and, as carefully and unobtrusively as possible, she removed her cell phone and scrolled to Justin’s name. What should she send to her brother? Help sounded like a good start. Or possibly, there’s a man in my shop and I think he’s drunk or stoned.

Yep, send something like that to Justin, and he would come in all guns blazing. Then he’d pin the weird guy to the floor and read him his rights. And the man currently staring at a wall didn’t look dangerous, just lost. Homeless, maybe?

Something more considered then, like, there is a vagrant in here, and he needs help, what should I do? The man moved a little. Away from her side of the store, the “roses” part of the setup, and over to the “notes” side. He was peering at the shelves; a collection of stationery and household bits and pieces like cushions and local crafts. He stumbled a little, turned to the side, and looked up at the display of posters on the far wall. Landscapes of Vermont; rivers, small towns, and red high-sided barns with gently rolling hills of emerald green.

“That’s wrong,” he said.

“Sorry?” Megan asked, but he didn’t reply.

He’s talking to the wall now. Should she add that to the text as well? This was going to end up being one hell of a lot of typing to explain what he was doing. Despite how odd it all looked, the visitor wasn’t threatening her. Also, Rachel would be back soon. Maybe between them they could sort this out?

He hadn’t even spoken to her, but something wasn’t right. Maybe it was the way he’d been standing, his hands in fists at his sides, staring now at the new Valentine’s wall display of flowers and hearts. Maybe it was the way he was dressed; dark jeans caked in mud, heavy boots that had tracked in the same mud. Not to mention the black hoodie with the hood partially hiding his face from her view.

Or maybe it was the despair in his hunched shoulders, the utter defeat in the way he had to support himself to stand.

Whatever it was, Megan was faced with two options. Talk to the strange man in her shop while she was alone in here, or call in reinforcements in case things went south.

Her visitor moved, not his feet, but his fists, unclenching and bringing his hands up to knuckle his eyes and then cover them. Megan’s cop brother liked to explain these things to her, but she didn’t need his help to recognize when despair in someone turned to anger.

She sent the standard 911 text, startled when she looked up and saw the stranger had stepped closer to her while she’d been distracted.

“Where am I?” he asked, his voice very soft.

“You’re in my shop.”

He shook his head. “I need the music. Someone took it, and I need it.”

Okay, this was so not going the way she wanted it to go. He was incoherent. Maybe he was homeless and needed a place to get out of the persistent snow that had plagued Stanford Creek the last few days. He’d evidently been somewhere slushy and muddy, if his clothes were anything to go by.

“I don’t understand, sir; what music do you need?” she asked, and waited for him to acknowledge her question. Instead, he took another, shaky, step forward, and covered his eyes again. “Hello? Can I help you?” she repeated when he didn’t look at her.

That finally got his attention. His hands came down, and she got her first clear look at his eyes and face. What she saw had her reaching to send another text. He had blood on him, smeared down from his temple into his wild beard, and his blue eyes were bright with something. Drugs maybe? Long dark hair hid some of his features, and he looked like he was about to keel over.

“Where’s the music?” he mumbled, his voice low and urgent. He gripped his temples hard and stumbled back, knocking a display of greeting cards to the floor. The sound was a loud clatter in the otherwise quiet room. “Shit… I didn’t…”

“Sir?” This time she was within reaching distance as he rounded on her, his lips pulled back in a snarl—or a grimace of pain, she couldn’t be entirely sure. Whatever, it wasn’t the look of someone who wanted to be spoken to. Time to leave. She glanced at the front door, then the fire exit. He was between her and the only possible ways out, and she was trapped. When she focused back on him, all she saw was a situation that could get out of hand. He was a good six inches taller than her five-nine, broad and built, with tattoos curling around his wrist, disappearing up under the sleeve of the hoodie.

Everything about him looked wrong. He didn’t move again, or even acknowledge her; all he did was stare with bright sapphire eyes, focused on a point behind her, scary and intense and so damned fixated with his expression in that scowl.

“What happened?” He groaned and covered his eyes again. “Call… Zee…”

She texted without looking, only glancing at the screen briefly to make sure she was sending another text to her brother and not some random person on her list. 911. Again. The standard sibling instruction for help me right the hell now, reserved for having one of her brothers rescue her from one of her many dreadful first dates. Garrett wasn’t even in town, so there was little point texting him, and Justin may not even be in the sheriff’s office. She hoped to hell he was, though, and had read her message. She’d know soon enough because the small sheriff’s office was close.

And still the stranger stood there, staring at her. At least he hadn’t moved any closer.

He closed his eyes and wiped at the blood that was trickling down his face, looking down at his hand and staring at the red that streaked his skin. She thought she heard a sob, but couldn’t be sure. Compassion welled inside her. Vagrant or not, dressed in soiled clothes and with the hood up, he didn’t have to be a criminal.

“Sir? Do you need help?” She held out her hand, but he stepped closer to her and damn it, she may have had self-defense training, but she wasn’t stupid. If the man was hopped up on drugs, she had to stay out of reach. The door opened, and Justin stepped in, all uniform and pissed-off attitude.

“Two 911s? This had better be good, Megs.”

Megan inclined her head to the man Justin evidently hadn’t seen in his dramatic entrance. Justin could handle himself, and he had a gun; he’d know what to do.

“What the hell?” Justin said as he assessed the situation, his hand automatically resting on his holstered weapon.

“I think it’s drugs,” she said loud enough for Justin to hear. The man looked at Justin and then to her, before shaking his head a little.

“No.” The voice was raspy, little more than a growl. “Not those.” He appeared to be struggling to talk, and he pressed his hands to each side of his head. “Just the music; Zee will know,” he added, but his voice slurred, and he coughed and doubled over.

Justin pulled his weapon and held it to one side, his other hand held in front of him as he stepped closer. “Sir? Are you hurt?”

Megan saw her brother’s hand on the sidearm, the other placating and suggesting and warning at the same time. She’d seen him stand like this when he broke up the fight at the drugstore. Not that he’d drawn his weapon then; he’d dealt with it by intimidation alone, because everyone involved lived in the town and no one messed with the sheriff. Megan looked at her brother, who teased her, who’d hidden her dolls and pulled her pigtails as a kid, but who was now in a situation that was serious. He was all business.

“What’s your name, sir?” Justin asked.

The stranger stepped back from him, straight into a pile of notebooks this time. The shelf shuddered and some of the display tilted. The movement translated into Justin grabbing the man’s hoodie to stop him falling as he flailed and attempted to stay upright.

He took a swing at Justin, who ducked and swerved. The attempted hit missed Justin by a mile, and the man followed the momentum he had begun, smacked his fist against a shelf edge, and collapsed in a heap on the floor. Then he didn’t move, was absolutely still. Justin holstered his weapon and crouched next to the prone form of the hooded man, checking for a pulse and then talking into his radio.

“Dispatch, 390D, medical assistance required at Notes & Roses.”

Megan didn’t hear the response; she came out from behind the counter and stood next to her brother. The adrenaline that had flooded her to deal with this was beginning to ebb, and she went down in the same crouch. The hood had fallen back and exposed his hair. The stranger was young; maybe the same age as her, and a long cut on his temple oozed fresh blood. Thinking on her feet, she located a clean tea towel from the small kitchen in the back and as an afterthought grabbed the first aid box. There was nothing more than Band-Aids and small bandages in it, but there may be something in there to press against the wound, something sterile.

Justin took the box and the towel and pressed the cloth against the man’s temple.

“Who is he?” Justin asked.

Megan frowned at the unconscious man. “I have no idea.”

“What was he doing in the shop?”

Megan glanced at her brother and resisted the urge to give him a sarcastic sister-type comeback. She needed to be professional.

“He came in and stood in the ‘notes’ side, staring at the wall.”

“And he didn’t say anything?”

“Something about wanting music and the letter Z. And when I asked him if he needed help, he turned and stared at me like he didn’t know where he was.”

“What the hell, Megan? You talked to him?”

“Well, what was I supposed to do? He was a customer, and looked like he needed help.”

“What did I tell you about drug addicts?” Justin snapped.

“The same as attackers, drunks, and anyone else who got anywhere near me, call you. I did that.”

The man on the floor moved, his eyes flickering open and staring up at Justin and Megan. “I don’t feel…” He never finished the sentence, his eyes closing again.

All Megan could think was, whoever he was, he had pretty eyes, the kind of blue that jumped out at you and screamed gorgeous. She couldn’t see much of his face, covered as it was with a bushy beard and blood.

“Should we find his ID or something?”

“SOP is not to go searching in drug addicts’ pockets,” Justin said with exaggerated patience.

“You think he’s a drug addict?”

The door chimed again, but it wasn’t the paramedics yet. Instead her business partner and cousin, Rachel, stood in the door, her jaw dropped and the cold of the rain blustering in behind her.

“Shut the door,” Justin and Megan said at the same time. Rachel closed the door with care, and her expression didn’t change.

“Why is there a man lying on the floor of our shop?” she managed. Then she stepped closer, staring down at John Doe, and her eyebrows climbed before she paled and grabbed hold of the nearest display. “Shit, there’s so much blood. Is he dead?” Like he’d heard her speak, the man coughed and curled in on himself on one side, muttering something, and she stumbled backward with a yelp.

“He’s clearly not dead,” Justin said. “Drugs, head wound, we don’t know yet.” Then he spoke into his radio. “Dispatch, do we have an ETA on the paramedics?”

“Three minutes out.”

“Ten-four, dispatch.”

“Is he bleeding out?” Rachel asked, her hand on her chest and her skin pale. Megan frowned; they really should get Rachel out of here. She’d never liked blood, not since the incident where she’d broken her arm in kindergarten and the bone had pierced the skin.

“Not enough blood for that,” Justin said.

“Do we know who he is?” Rachel asked. “Should we check his wallet or something? He could be here with someone?” She glanced out the shop window as if expecting the man’s friends or family to be searching for him.

“I can’t look for his wallet yet,” Justin explained. “SOP with suspected addicts.”

“SOP?” Rachel half whispered as an aside.

“Standard operating procedure,” Megan whispered back. “The guy could have needles on him.”

“What about the recovery position?” Rachel pointed out. “Should we at least move him?”

Justin indicated the unconscious man with a wave of his hand. “Think he already did it himself.”

Then in silence they stood and waited for the paramedics to arrive, and all that time Megan stared down at the stranger, memorizing every bump and scratch on his face. What a waste. He could be so handsome, almost pretty, with those stunning sky eyes and the plump lips. He’d be a killer if he smiled, she thought.

“He doesn’t smell,” Rachel commented, even though she wrinkled her nose. She gestured at him. “And those jeans? They’re an expensive brand you know. So he’s probably not homeless.”

Megan didn’t feel much like discussing the unconscious man. She wanted the help to get here soon.

The paramedics arrived and in a flurry of motion, they asked rapid questions of Megan, which she couldn’t answer in full. “Did he have a fit? Did he choke?” She answered as best she could and hoped that was enough for them to have some idea what had happened. They checked John Doe’s vitals, hefted him onto a gurney, and left, all without the man regaining consciousness. Justin followed soon after, giving Megan a quick hug and extracting a promise from her to stay safe, and then it was Rachel and Megan alone in the shop.

Rachel looked anywhere except at the blood and Megan knew she had to get her out of the shop. “You go up to Carter’s and get some fresh coffee.”

“You need help,” Rachel began. She looked torn as she gestured at the floor.

“I’ll clear this up. Go.”

“What if someone else comes in?”

“Another vagrant covered in blood?” Megan smiled as she said it. She hoped she’d had her full quota of vagrants for this year.

“You never know,” Rachel said, frowning.

“Go.”

Rachel looked at the door and back at Megan, as if she were expecting another strange man to come in while she was out and was worried about leaving her. Megan went back to the small storage room at the back of the store. She pulled out the mop and bucket and the cleaning supplies and by the time she came back out Rachel had gone. She wasn’t surprised. Evidently alongside her phobia about blood, Rachel had analyzed the situation with her rational, logical approach and had decided Megan could manage another strange man collapsing on their floor if she had to. Megan cleaned up the smears of scarlet and the tracked-in mud, and realigned all the notebooks and stationery on the knocked shelf. While she worked, all she could think was despite the shock and drama of what had happened, the man with the beautiful sapphire eyes hadn’t seemed dangerous to her.

Confused, high or drunk, desperate, traumatized, wet, and muddy, maybe. But certainly not dangerous.
